About Dorothy
On February 29, 2020, I took a leap (get it? leap day!) and started Rand Communications in St. Louis Park, MN. With about 20 years of PR and communications experience to build on and a résumé editor contractor role I had recently gotten, I dove in to being a solopreneur. I've now edited over 900 résumés and other networking documents as well as conducted media relations, editing, and content strategy for a live show/podcast about gender and equity issues and a website/blog for mothers. I'm passionate about helping non-profits, small businesses, and job-seekers thrive through solid content strategy and clear communications.
Originally from Minneapolis, early in my career I worked at a non-profit for architects where I wore many communications hats including managing the website, planning events, myriad writing and editing projects, and proofing and writing articles for the organization's magazine. This experience was followed by the adventure of moving to Los Angeles with my husband and living there for ten years and having our two children there.
As a life-long lover of museums, I was able to fulfill a dream of working at one while living in LA. I handled community outreach, print projects, website and email content, and public and media relations for the organization’s wide array of programs including world music performances, family festivals, youth and adult learning classes.

There does seem to be a homing beacon for people born in Minnesota who have left, however, and in 2016 we returned and happily settled in St. Louis Park.
Volunteering has always been important to me and I've been fortunate to do lots of it utilizing my communications skills including planning events, chairing committees, and most recently serving as president of the parent-teacher organization at my kids' elementary school. This was a challenging role (not only because of a global pandemic!) but I loved it. I collaborated with diverse stakeholders, enjoyed leading a board, and wrote more mass emails than I can count. I steered the organization with a racial equity lens, analyzing our events and efforts for exclusion or accessibility, hosting speakers that addressed issues of systemic racism, and working to ensure everyone in our school community felt welcome and able to get involved. I am very interested in DEI work and am continually striving to learn and grow in this area.
When not working or volunteering, you can find me: hiking with my dog Luna; cooking; reading; teaching myself modern calligraphy; at the library; attempting to knit; traveling or planning a trip; or cheering on my kids at their various activities.
I am a...
